Digital Detox: 5 Transformative Tips to Declutter Your Digital Space

“Digital digital get down…just you and meeee!” ? Any NSYNC OG fans out there?! If not, just ignore that intro…ha! We use our phones and laptops all day long, so why are we not talking more about keeping our digital items organized?! A cluttered desktop (or home screen!) is a cluttered mind. If you are a victim of untidied tech, not to fear! Today I am sharing 5 digital decluttering tips I use myself and swear by to keep my phone and laptop organized.

  1. Go through your downloads folder every week. Every Friday morning I search through my downloads & desktop folder and move any items off my laptop to either the virtual trash bin or to a back-up cloud service (and delete from the desktop). It is an easy habit that keeps my computer running quickly! It takes seconds!

  2. Albums. Sort that camera roll on your phone! Delete old screenshots and photos you don’t need. Create albums by event, year, or person or a combination, and then back those photos up on a cloud service!

  3. Google Drive or Dropbox are your BFFs. If you are not backing up your documents on a cloud service, really really give it serious consideration. There is no need to slow down your phone or laptop with documents you don’t access every day. Move those babies to a Google Drive or Drop Box account. Google Drive is my favorite! If you have a Gmail address, you already have a Google Drive, so make sure you are using it!

  4. Don’t be afraid of micro folders. Folders within other folders (aka micro folders) are your friend! This is especially true on your computer or cloud service such as Google Drive. I have a folder for my business & one for personal then within that I have sub folders. For example, under your personal folder, you can have a house folder that houses all the things regarding your home (i.e. contracts, vendor contact sheet, etc.) I go further then that and make other folders within the house folder. I know exactly where everything is this way.

  5. Sort your phone apps. Whether it is by folder, color, or page. Organize the apps on your phone in a way that makes sense to you. When I search for an app on my phone, I am looking for it by color, therefore my apps are sorted by color. One page is red, the next orange, then yellow and so on and so forth.

Bonus Tip: Turn off all notifications you don’t need. There are so many dings, buzzes, and bells competing for you attention all day. Silence the ones you don’t need. The only notifications I keep on my phone are my texts & calls. All social media notifications, emails, & other apps are muted. I check my email at designated times during the day to ensure I don’t miss anything, and it has become a routine in my day. I PROMISE you life is so much better without all the phone sounds!

Bonus Bonus Tip: Do not be the coworker with your speakers turned on your computer or laptop. Everyone in the office knows every time you receive an email or instant message. Mute for your sanity and for others! I promise it makes for a better working environment for you and your work buddies!
