From Bland to Grand: Interior Designer Tricks for Stunning Windows

You might be surprised (or maybe not) how many of my design questions are about window treatments! I am typically asked the same round of questions every time and today I am spilling my super top secrets, (or ahem) tips and tricks regarding window treatments!

  1. Curtain Rod Height. How high should I hang my curtain rod? It all depends on the height of your ceilings and the length of your curtains. I always recommend hanging your curtain rod high and wide! The higher you hang your curtains above your actual window, the taller the allusion of your window. I prefer my curtains to hover centimeters to a few inches above the ground when possible, but I am definitely not a gathered on the floor girl. You do you!

  2. Curtain Rod Width. Like I said, hang the curtains high and wide! Let’s talk about the wide part. When possible, I recommend aiming to extend your curtain rod a minimum of 12” past the window on each side. Again, you are adding to the allusion of a wider window! Allow your curtains to cover these additional 12 inches.

  3. High End Shades for an Amazon Price. Shades are sure making a comeback! From linen to woven bamboo, shades can add the perfect amount of texture, privacy, and pleasing aesthetic to your windows. While shades can be pretty pricey, Amazon has been crushing it with great shades and great prices. These are my favorite woven shades that you do not have to drill or use tools for!

  4. Skip the grommets & add the curtain rings. Grommets are out! Shocking, I know! Pass on the curtains with the metal grommets built-in, and add curtain ring clips or a combo of curtain rings with pin hooks for a timeless and upscale look for your curtains that will not go out of style. Bonus Tip: Pleated curtains are gaining popularity quickly. If you want the look, but don’t want to spend time pinning pleats, Amazon has some wonderful pre-pleated curtains ready to hang. Check them out here.

  5. Yes, you can use more than one treatment. Some of the most beautiful window treatments are in fact a combo of more than one. I love pairing shades with gorgeous curtains! The shades add horizontal visual interest to the window! Do you have interior shutters? Feel free to add curtains as well! It does not always have to be one or the other.
