Avoid Common Mistakes: Do’s and Do Not’s of Area Rug Shopping

Do’s

  1. Do Measure Your Space: Before leaving your home or opening that browser, be sure you measure your room and know the area you want to cover before purchasing a rug.

  2. Do Consider Traffic Flow: A wool rug is not going to be your best bet for high traffic areas such as near the front door. Be sure you are selecting durable, easy-to-clean materials for high-traffic areas.

  3. Do Use Rugs to Define Spaces: In larger rooms or open concept floor plans, use rugs to delineate different zones such as separating a seating area from a dining space.

Don'ts

  1. Don’t Purchase Rugs That Are Too Small: A rug that's too small can create the effect of a postage stamp under your furniture. Err on the larger size when possible. For example, a 4x6 or 5x8 rug is rarely going to be the best fit for a seating area with a sofa. Pro Tip: Anchor your rugs via at least one piece of furniture so your rug doesn’t look like it is just floating. You don’t want your rug to feel disconnected from the rest of your space.

  2. Don’t Ignore Rug Padding: You have heard me say this multiple times. Always use a rug pad. Skipping rug pads can lead to slips and damage to your floor. Not only will the lifespan of your rug be extended by using a rug pad, the rug pad adds a a layer of comfortability that feels great under foot.

  3. Don’t Overlook Maintenance: Consider the maintenance needs of the rug material and choose one that fits you and your family’s day to day. There are so many materials available from jute to wool to washable rugs. If you are looking for maintenance tools, I wrote a blog post about maintaining upholstery, which also includes carpet-care items.
