Timeless Harmony: Merging Vintage Charm with Modern Elegance

I often hear variations of the following statement: “ I just don’t know what my style is because I feel like I lean towards more than one.”

Well, friend, I am here to provide relief! There is an elegant way to mix styles, especially when it comes to mixing modern and vintage styles in your home. In fact, mixing styles can absolutely transform a space from basic to the most aesthetically interesting & beautifully curated space. Talk about adding character!

Today, I am sharing tactical tips for seamlessly blending old & new pieces in your home:

  1. Bring in pieces with modern takes on it’s original vintage style. Think vintage-inspired design on brand new pieces.

  2. Vary the Scale: Do not be afraid to mix and match larger vintage pieces with smaller modern items and the other way around. This will create interest in your design!

  3. Balance Texture: If you are using hard surface pieces, which are common with vintage items (think metal), balance them out with softer textures like linen, wool, wood. This can be achieved through decorative boxes made of linen, wool rugs, and wood frames.

  4. Be Selective When Blending Eras: When mixing pieces from different time periods, be mindful that they “speak” to one another. You do not want a piece to stand out because it does not fit in well with the rest of your selections.

  5. Add Character With Vintage-Inspired Wallpapers Or Fabrics: I love a wallpaper with modern colors and a vintage inspired print! This is the perfect example of combining both worlds seamlessly! When searching for pillows, follow the same rules to add character and create depth in your design.

  6. Repeat Shapes, Patterns, & Colors: Use repeating shapes, patterns, or colors in both modern and vintage piece to create cohesion in your design. Do you have a gorgeous antique floral art piece? Repeat this “motif” with a floral-inspired modern rug or shower curtain.
